Explaining to mom what I do for money

April 15th, 2010 · No Comments

She wanted to book a flight to Belgrade. She had a price in her mind, and a type of flight (no stopovers), and agencies to book with. turns out the price is not compatible with stopovers.

Turns out stopovers aren’t really the issue, nor is price, or wanting to fly with certain agencies. After some choice words from both parties, we got to the core.

Not being able to ask for directions should she need them at the stopover airport, cause her English is not good enough is THE issue. She hates not being able to do everything by herself and dependent on others.

The flight we took care of. And the real issue got treated as well. She is starting a course English when she gets back. She feels good about it. Not only will she learn new skills, she will also be able to choose from a broader selection of flights (stopover or not, agency know or not…). Thus liberating her from the need to pay for unnecessary premium flights with JAT Airways, unless she wants to. Double whammy.

Finding the real issue/problem and coming up with a solution that resonates and works long term. That is what I do.
